In smaller mountain towns, it is a common theme that many companies installing eavestroughs do not follow the same standards as professional crews from larger cities like Calgary or Vancouver. As a result, eavestroughs are often installed without using a level to verify proper sloping, with cheap plastic hangers that break and fall off, with screws that are too short to grip into the wooden structure, or with too few downspouts placed in the wrong locations. Some installers even attempt to drain downspouts underground to avoid landscaping challenges. This almost always fails, causing the line to freeze, back up, and eventually burst.
Corners and 90-degree joints also begin to leak over time and simply need to be properly resealed if the metal itself is still in good condition. Regular maintenance such as resealing key sections, replacing failed hangers, and correcting slope issues can restore a system that still has plenty of life left in it.
Mountain living brings its own challenges as well, especially on the shady sides of valleys where eavestroughs freeze solid through the winter. These problems can be remediated with commercial-grade steel eavestroughs, proper re-sloping, or adding downspouts in very specific locations to restore correct water flow and prevent ongoing damage.

Ice dams are almost always a sign of underlying condensation issues, because the ice tends to freeze on the inside of the roof structure as well as on the outside. This can rot the wood, damage the roof system, and eventually cause serious interior problems. When ice dams form, we don’t just remove the ice and walk away. We investigate further to determine why the dam formed in the first place and identify the underlying venting or heat-loss issues that allowed it to develop. After removing the ice, we continue monitoring the area to make sure the problem does not return, which confirms that the root cause has been properly resolved.
